City OKs annexation for clerk’s land

The Polo City Council has approved annexing land owned by its city clerk allowing her to stay in the position.

In a unanimous vote without discussion on Monday, the council signed off on bringing in property at 13557 W. Milledgeville Road recently bought by City Clerk Sydney Bartelt.

Bartelt ran unopposed for city clerk in April 2017, taking over from Susie Corbitt, who declined to run again after holding the job for 24 years.

Her term is up in 2021, and to be city clerk, she must live within city limits.

Before annexing Bartelt’s land, the council needed to annex 40 acres bordering the city’s west limits owned by David and Laurie Sherrick between the Buffalo Creek subdivision and Oregon Trail Road.

The council approved that measure last month in a 3-to-1 vote, with Alderman Donald Sanders providing the dissenting vote because of concerns that it was just being done for Bartelt’s benefit.

Mayor Doug Knapp had said that the annexing Bartelt’s land later was part of the reasoning for the move but also because of potential tax revenue if building is done on Oregon Trail Road in the future.
