Spelling missile wrong did not stop Danielle Hagemann from being crowned the top speller at Forreston Grade School Jan. 29.
In the eighth round of the school spelling bee Hagemann spelled missile as missale.
Three other spellers in the round also missed their word.
Sam Cederholm misspelled solemn as soloum.
Anna Snider misspelled octopus as octapus.
Bekah Tilstra misspelled senator as senetor.
One speller, Lizzie Gronewold spelled straightforward correctly, but had to spell one additional word to win.
Unfortunately, Gronewold misspelled exercise as exersize.
With this miss, all five of these spellers advanced to the next round.
Strengthen, and bargain were misspelled in this round while diamond, applause, and author were spelled correct.
In the final round Hagemann correctly spelled courage while her competitors misspelled their words.
The missed words in the round were extinct as extint, and consonant as consenent.
To win the bee, Hagemann spelled population.
With the win, Hagemann will advance to the regional spelling bee at Dixon High School on Feb. 25.
The winner of the regional bee will get to compete at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. on May 28-29.
Eighteen students competed in this year’s bee.
Hagemann, daughter of Brad and Jean Hagemann, earned the right to be called “champion”.
Gronewold finished second.
