Organizers of Oregon’s Memorial Day Ceremony outsmarted Mother Nature on Monday, adjusting the schedule to beat the mid-morning showers that fell across the area.
The Oregon VFW, in cooperation with the Oregon American Legion, first placed wreaths at the World War I memorial on the east side of the Ogle County Courthouse and then at the new veterans memorial on the north side.
After that, a float carrying veterans and VFW members, headed to Riverside Cemetery on North Third Street for a short ceremony.
Girl Scouts placed flowers on graves of soldiers at the end of the ceremony which included music provided by Oregon High School band members, led by band director Andy Eckardt.
“Thank you for coming today,” VFW Commander Bob Coulter told the crowd. “We kept it short to beat the rain.”
