David L. Rahn Junior High held its annual Spelling Bee on Jan. 18.
Thirty-three seventh and eighth graders participated in the bee, proctored by Oregon’s Assistant Superintendent Adam Larsen.
It was a strong group of spellers as only seven misspelled their opening round words.
In round two, seven more spellers fell. Round three proved to be tough as 11 additional spellers dropped out of the contest.
With the field narrowed to eight, the atmosphere grew tense. The group was cut in half after round four.
Seventh grader Ava Wight was the lone elimination in the next round on the word, sinewy.
Three spellers, Marbella Alvarez, Emmett Peterson and Alyssa Torres, remained.
Unfortunately, the school day ended with no winner.
The following morning, the three spellers returned. Alvarez spelled her first word incorrectly, boisterously. Torres and Peterson remained.
After a few miscues, the Bee ended in the eleventh round. Torres missed, piece de resistance. Peterson countered with a correct spelling of anecdote and then sealed the win with malign.
Peterson will now advance to the Regional Spelling Bee to be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, at Dixon High School beginning at 10 a.m.
DLR Spelling Bee participants were: Emmett Peterson, Eden Nielsen, Ryan Fox, Abigayle Miller, Brandon Rowe, Nadia Theisen, Jennica Ciesiel, Gracie Kelschner, Mariah Drake, Wesley Immel, Gracie Zuniga, Jacob Allen, Lindsie Van Dyck, Ethan George, Kiele Carlson, Sophia Stender, Zachary Garrett, Alexys Davis, Terrance Harris, Marbella Alvarez, Bradley Cheever, Abigail Rogers, Kennrick Oriyavong, Kaylen Byerhof, Jenae Bothe, Kayshia Stevenson, Avery Clark, Anaya Hitchcock, Isaac Brooks, Ava Wight, Alyssa Torres, Kolten Case, and Abigail Virgil.
