Hawks finish in fifth at Oregon volleyball Invite

It was a fifth-place finish for Oregon and seventh for Forreston at the Oregon Volleyball Invitational.

Contested over Friday and Saturday at the Blackhawk Center, Durand beat Keith Country Day for the title in the 16-team event.

In pool play, Oregon beat Erie 25-11 and 25-11, Pearl City 22-25, 25-16 and 15-17. The Hawks’ only pool loss was to Tinley Park 25-14 and 25-17.

“We were able to use different people in different positions,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “Playing five games in two days, it was a quick turnaround to get focused.”

Oregon beat Eastland for the second time this season, 21-15, 25-17 and 15-7. Then in the fifth-place game, the Hawks took it to Stockton 25-18 and 25-19.

“We were able to get everyone in. This is a well-rounded team,” McNamee said. “There are lots of options for me to use. The girls are excited.”

Forreston easily handled Mendota and East Peoria in their pool play before running into NUIC foe Lena-Winslow. In a very close match, the Cardinals won game one 25-14, before falling 25-11 and 15-13 in the final set.

“I’ve seen some good things from our libero (Shianne Mitchell) and Katie (Erdmann) created opportunities,” Dakota coach Shannon Williams said.

In another close match, Forreston lost to Stockton 25-27, 25-19 and 15-6. That placed them in the seventh-place game against Eastland. In an exciting first set, the Cardinals prevailed 30-28. They won the match by taking a 25-18 final game.

“Defensively, the girls are coming in and stepping up,” Williams said. “We just have to put more balls away offensively.”

Gylian Finch and Bailey Nelson were named to the all-tournament team for Oregon and Erdmann made it for Forreston.
