A Machesney Park man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2012 murder of his wife, whose body was found in the Rock River south of Byron.

Todd Smith, 49, was sentenced last week to 59 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Winnebago County Judge Fernando Engelsma handed down the sentence April 4.

Smith was found guilty of first degree murder on Jan. 25 in the death of Katrina Smith, 30.

He was also found guilty of aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, and concealment of a homicide.

Smith has been held in the Winnebago County Jail since his arrest on Nov. 21, 2012.

An off-duty Byron fireman, who had been fishing, discovered Katrina’s body in the river about a mile south of Byron around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2012 and called 911. She had been missing since Oct. 22.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Police and Byron Fire Department divers recovered the body.

An autopsy performed on Nov. 10, 2012 at the Ogle County morgue determined that Katrina died from blunt force trauma.

She was identified through her dental records.
