Neva Hansen Engelkes Grady, 72, Franklin Grove, began the next leg of her journey on Thursday, July 24, 2014 in her home.
Neva was born in Ashton on July 28, 1941, the daughter of Orville and Gladys Hersch Hansen.
Neva was married to Ron Engelkes in 1958, and together they had five children, Bonnie (Dennis) Echelbarger, Franklin Grove, Bruce (Lorna Headlee fiancé) Engelkes, Dixon, Barbara (Randy) Shankel, Ashton, Barry Engelkes and Billie (Doug) Heier, Ashton.
Barry died in 1963, and Ronnie died in 1974.
Neva married John (Jack) Grady in May of 1982; he died in October of 2012.
Together they raised Angus cattle and Southdown and Hampshire sheep.
She was also a member of Ogle County Genealogical Society.
She was one of the founders of Ladies Night Out. This was the 50th year that they have met and enjoyed it.
Neva drove school bus for Ashton School District and then drove for Loves Park and retired from Rockford Mass Transit Bus System.
She is survived by her children, Bonnie (Dennis) Echelbarger, Franklin Grove, Bruce (Lorna Headlee fiancé) Engelkes, Dixon, Barbara (Randy) Shankel, Ashton, and Billie (Doug) Heier, Ashton. Neva has been blessed with nine grandchildren, Bonnie’s are Lee (Jodi nee Rothman) Echelbarger, Desa Echelbarger, and Darcy (Chuck) Spence. Bruce’s is Ella (Nick) Payne. Barb’s are Krystle Bubrick, Randall Shankel and Ron Shankel. Billie’s are John (Mellisa nee Spillman) Powers and Carrie Powers.
Step-grandchildren are Jimmy Grady, Carrie (Eric) Gagnon and Michelle Grady.Neva’s grandchildren have given her the gifts of nine great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Esther (Morris) Hughes,Courtland, Russell (Lil nee Novak) Hansen, Rockford, Glen (Gloria nee Brock) Hansen. Gulliver, Mich. and Bonnie (Curt) McKean, Polo; and aunts, Opal Hersch Stokes, Monticello, Minn., and Janet (Lovold) Hersch, Champlain, Minn.; her in-law siblings: Shirley Frahm, Marvin (Margo nee Barry) Engelkes, Irma (Mike) Seaworth, and Sharon (Tom Johnson) Kirchner.
Besides her husbands and her son, Barry, she was predeceased by her great-grandson Gavin Echelbarger in 2005.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Mills and Petrie building in Ashton.
