Nellis E. Cherry

Nellis E. Cherry, 91, Shannon, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon.   

Nellis was born Oct. 27, 1922 in Mt. Vernon, IL, the son of Ray and Etta (Hamblen) Cherry.  

He married Lou Eva Gulley on Oct. 25, 1952. She preceded him in death on April 17, 2006.  Nellis owned and operated Cherry Brothers Feed Mill in Shannon for more than 30 years.  

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and earning three Bronze Star medals.  

Nellis was a member of the Tebala Shrine.  He also loved to hunt and fish with family and friends.  

Survivors include daughter Deb (Brad) Feller, Granville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a nephew and niece; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen (Mike) Davis.

He was preceded in death by a son in infancy, two brothers, and a sister.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 6 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St., Polo, with services to follow at 10:30 a.m.  

Burial will be at Shannon Cemetery, Shannon.  

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Serenity Hospice and Home.
