The "Those Who Excel" program through the Illinois State Board of Education annually recognizes people that have made outstanding contributions to education.

Oregon High School English teacher Aaron Sitze is a Teacher of the Year finalist.

Sitze has taught at OHS for 11 years.

“On any given day if one were to drop into any one of Mr. Sitze’s English II classes, this is what one would see and/or hear: laughter; high-level questions from both students and Mr. Sitze; true discussion stemming from those high-level questions, a palpable sense of energy from both students and Mr. Sitze; true, deep learning by both students and Mr. Sitze,” said OHS Principal Andrew Nelson.

Others who are being recognized are Thomas Mahoney, Superintendent – Award of Merit; Oregon Elementary Fine Arts Department – Award of Excellence; Kristin Boyer, Early Career Educator – Award of Merit; and Bill Nesemeier, Educational Support Personnel – Award of Excellence.

All nominees are being recognized at the "Those Who Excel" banquet in Normal on Saturday, Oct. 19.

This is the third time in four years that the Oregon School District has had a teacher of the year finalist.

Previous finalists were Kim Radostits - 2010-2011 Oregon High School Spanish teacher and Pam Steele - 2012-2013 Oregon Elementary School science teacher.
