James D. Smith

James Dean “J.D.” Smith Sr., 70, Oregon, formerly of Kewanee, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at his home in Oregon.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1942 in Kewanee, the son of Thomas W.and Mary Mattingly Smith.

He was married to Cecelia Marie Cervantez on Aug. 23, 1975 in Cambridge.

She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2001.

He is survived by a son, James Smith Jr., Tampico; a step-son, William Booker, Peoria; two daughters, Linda (Tom) O’Neal and Lorraine Silva, both of Portales, N.M.; two step-daughters, Jacquieline Klein, Kewanee, and Kim ( Rick) Shelley of Crestview, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas Smith, Phoenix, Ariz., and David (Ruth) Smith, Fredonia, Pa.

He attended Kewanee schools and had served his country in the U.S. Navy.

He was retired after working a number of years in the strip mines.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Kewanee, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oregon and the Knights of Columbus.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Kewanee.

Visitation was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.

A rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home. An additional visitation will be held Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kewanee.

Memorials can be directed to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or to St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon.

Arrangements were completed by Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.
