Rain fails to dampen 4th Annual Mix It Up at Mix Park in Oregon

Stormy weather and rain on Saturday morning didn’t stop community members from painting their sidewalk squares at the 2013 Mix It Up on Saturday.

The 4th annual sidewalk painting event went on despite the weather at Mix Park in Oregon June 22.

“The rain had stopped by 8 a.m. and members of Boy Scout Troop 52 had white washed the squares.

Things were looking good, but we were hit with a torrential downpour as participants arrived at the park to pick up their kits and begin painting,” said Maja Shoemaker, event coordinator.

Shoemaker said many participants waited out the rain in the shelter, but some took their kits home and came back an hour or so later.

“We had 55 squares sold prior to the event, and even sold several that morning, despite the weather,” she said.

Many squares were painted by groups. Flowers, sports, animals, and splatter painting were popular subjects.

Wet sidewalks and dripping trees made the painting a bit more difficult and the ground around the square muddy, Shoemaker said.

Committee members handed out flattened cardboard boxes for participants to kneel on while they worked.

Dave Balch from Ralphie and LuLu’s provided food for the event. At one point, he was wearing a garbage bag while grilling in the rain, Shoemaker said.

“Dave and Marilyn (Balch) were real troopers. Everyone loves the pork chop sandwiches and fabulous desserts. We appreciate their generosity in supporting our scholarship program,” said Shoemaker.

Proceeds from food sales and T-shirt sales (designed by Oregon High School student Megan Boehle) support a scholarship awarded to an Ogle County high school senior pursuing a career in art or agriculture.

This year the Mix It Up Committee gave out two $500 scholarships. Recipients were Chloe Gale, Oregon and Tyler Hanlin, Byron.

“We also want to thank our sponsors. We could not put on our event without their generosity,” said Shoemaker.

This year’s event sponsors were: KSB Hospital, Expression Wear Screenprinting, Oregon Park District,

The Fields Project, Ralphie & LuLu’s, Byron Bank, Davis-Mueller Country Financial, Byron  County Market, InBronze Studio, Blackhawk Carpet and Tile, State Farm Insurance Agency, Stillman Bank, Byron Bank Financial Services, Jay’s Drive In, Oregon Soap Shoppe, Merlin’s Greenhouse, Ace Hardware, and White Pines Ranch.

Next year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014.
