According to an Ogle County Sheriff's Department news release, Cothard was driving his car eastbound in the 1,000 block of Oregon Trail Road when the vehicle went off the right side of the road in a curve and struck a utility pole on the south side of the road.

Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn said deputies were assisted at the scene by the Oregon Police Department, Oregon Ambulance Service, and Oregon Fire Department.
