The Ogle County Board made Mike Rock's temporary job permanent Tuesday night — at least for the next two years.

The board unanimously approved county board chairman Kim Gouker's recommendation to appoint Rock as Ogle County State's Attorney, replacing John B.(Ben) Roe who left the job eight days ago to become a judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit.

"I appreciate your confidence [in me]," Rock, 46, told the board after the vote. "I plan to continue the good work my predecessor started."

He promised to be a tough prosecutor and to seek justice.

Rock, who was first assistant state's attorney under Roe for two years, was appointed interim state's attorney Jan. 7, the same day Roe was sworn in as judge.

Fifteenth Circuit Chief Judge Val Gunnarsson signed an order naming Rock as interim state's attorney until the county board meeting when the permanent appointment could be made.

Rock will serve the first two years of the four-year term Roe was elected to Nov. 6, two days before the Illinois Supreme Court appointed him to the bench to replace retiring judge Michael Mallon.

The remaining two years will be up for election in November of 2014.

Roe, 37, had served as state's attorney since 2004.

Rock also served as an Ogle County Assistant State's Attorney from March of 1994 to June of 2000. He was in private practice in Rockford for the 10 and one-half years until he returned to the state's attorneys office in December of 2010.

Currently a resident of Poplar Grove, Rock said he and his wife and their three children will be moving to Byron in the near future.

Rock was one of four attorneys who applied for the state's attorney post late last year.

The county board rejected a selection committee's recommendation of M. Thomas Suits, Polo, for the post on Dec. 18.

Rock, Suits, and two others, Eric Morrow and Robin Minnis, were interviewed in early December by the committee made up of Gouker, board vice chairman John Finfrock, Mt. Morris, and board members Greg Sparrow, Rochelle, Bruce McKinney, Rochelle, and Bill Welty, Chana.
