After more than a month with its doors closed, a gas station in Forreston may reopen.

Forreston Village President Michael Harn said Monday that he recently received a letter informing him that the BP gas station and convenience store, 209 N. Walnut Ave., may eventually be back in business.

"The letter said the present owner has refinanced and it may open again under a new name, Forreston Stop & Go," he said.

Attorneys for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) filed foreclosure proceedings last September against the gas station, Midtown Marathon Inc., and also against 301 Walnut Gas & Food Mart, Inc., Sibi Kadalimatton, Jennifer Greenfield, Collin Greenfield Jr., and other defendants.

Court documents identified Kadalimatton as the guarantor of a mortgage on the property that was in default for $1.8 million.

Jennifer Greenfield and Collin Greenfield, both of Forreston, were identified in the documents as registered agents, tenants, and possible stockholders of the business.

The foreclosure case was dismissed on Dec. 13 after FDIC attorneys filed a motion to dismiss, which stated the loan for the property had been sold to another bank and the agency no longer wished to pursue foreclosure.

Court documents said Mutual Bank, Harvey, originally held the mortgage, but was closed July 31, 2009 by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation, Division of Banking. The FDIC was named receiver.

Harn said the gas station has been closed since early December when ComEd shut off the electricity due to an unpaid bill.

The village shut off the water to the business after that, he said, to avoid having frozen pipes with no heat in the building.
