G. Powell Cunningham

Gordon Powell Cunningham, 91, a life-time resident of Pine Creek Township in Ogle County, died on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Serenity House in Oregon,ending a long and fruitful life.

Powell was born on March 21, 1921, in Pine Creek Township, the son of Gordon Nelson Cunningham and Lois Marie Powell Cunningham and brother of Joanna Hopkins, all of whom preceded him in death.

He attended Highland country school and graduated from Polo Community High School in 1939.

He attended Northern Illinois University for a year before returning to the family farm.

He served in the United States Army in 1945.  While stationed at Fort Ord in Salinas, California, he met Jean Walker, who became his wife on Feb. 14, 1948.

They are the parents of Steve (Rita), Sugar Grove, Ruth Moats (deceased), Jane (Tom) Hamilton, Polo, Mary (Ken) Toms, Forreston, and Dan (Toni), Aurora.  Powell is also survived by son-in-law, Larry Moat,Dixon, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Powell was a dairy farmer.  He led the Pine Creek Valley 4-H Club for 25 years; served on the Ogle County Farm Bureau Board, including four years as president; and served Pine Creek Township as a trustee for 20 years.

He was an active member and elder of the Pine Creek Christian Church.

His life was celebrated at a visitation on Oct. 30 at Polo Family Funeral Home  and funeral services at the Pine Creek Christian Church (Lowell Park Road, Polo) on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m.

Memorials have been established to the Ogle County 4-H Foundation and to Evergreen Cemetery.
Arrangements were completed by Polo Family Funeral Home.
