Polo senior Alina Llanas hit the state championship greens Oct 12-13 at the Red Trail Run Golf Course in Decatur and finished in 36th place.

"It was the greatest thing ever," said Llanas. "Knowing I was good enough. It was the greatest."

Her coach Don Reece agreed.

"I think it went extremely well," said Reece. "What she acomplished was awesome. Saturday was the best 18 holes of her life."

Day one got off to a rocky start with a 3-over struggle at the seventh hole, a bogie at the third, and three additional holes over par. But Llanas fought hard landing a birdie at the sixth hole and shooting par at holes two, five, and nine.

The back nine brought better strokes with a birdie at at 11th hole and par for the final four, but Llanas found frustration at the 12th hole where she shot five over par. She also bogeyed at the 13th and had two more holes over par.

Llanas finished day one tied for 49th place with a round total of 90.

Day two had a promising start with six of the first nine coming in at par and bogies for the remaining three.

The back nine weren't quite as strong as Llanas struggled at the 12th and 15th holes, shooting 3-over and 2-over respectively, but wrapped up the meet with four holes on par and three bogies.

"I had a good round Saturday, but I had trouble in the sand," said Llanas. "Sand traps are not my friend."

Llanas finished the second round with an 83, giving her a two-day total of 173 and a 36th place finish overall.

"I feel acomplished," said Llanas. "My coach was a confidence booster."

The state final course was difficult but Llanas thought the sectional course was harder.

"This course is wide open but there were sand traps," she said. "The sectional course was filled with trees."

Another obsticle was the weather.

"Day one was windy and on day two there was a delay for rain," said Reece. "She had some good plays and was able to recover after any bad hole."
