LaVerne F. “Twerp” Zellers, 90, Leaf River, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 in the Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon.
Twerp was born Jan. 8, 1922 in Leaf River, the son of Floyd and Ella (Johnson) Zellers.
He graduated from Leaf River High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Twerp served on PT boats during campaigns in the Philippines and New Guinea.
He received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon with 1 star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
Twerp married Mary Watts on Nov. 11, 1949 in Mt. Morris.
He worked for Monroe Calculating Company, Rockford, servicing adding machines.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris.
He loved to fish, cook, and garden.
Twerp also loved his dogs, playing bingo, bowling, and spending time working at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge 1551.
He was a member of Mt. Morris Moose Lodge 1551 and he was a life member of the VFW Post 8739.
He is survived by a brother, Keith (Carol) Zellers, Leaf River; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; four brothers, Walter, Robert, Royal, and Donald; and sisters, Florence Schreiber and Doris Kuntzelman.
Funeral services were Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with Rev. Frank Lay officiating.
Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery, Mt. Morris.
Visitation was Friday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Finch Funeral Home with a Moose service.
Memorials have been established to Serenity Hospice & Home and the Leaf River Fire Department.
