Walter S. "Red" Gipe

Walter S. “Red” Gipe, 81, Pecatonica, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, surrounded by his family.

Walter was born on May 21, 1931 in Coleta,, the son of Samuel and Loda (Pate) Gipe.

He attended Polo High School Class of 1950.

He married Mary Jean Kalas on May 15, 1954 in Polo.

Walter served in the U.S. Army and then the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He worked as a tool and die maker for Twin Disc and Clutch, Rockford, retiring in 1986.

Walter was a member of the Winnebago County Fair Board,  Eugene J. Barloga American Legion Post #197, enjoyed woodcarving after retiring, the outdoors and going to the grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.

He is survived by wife, Mary Jean; son, Jerry “Gipper” (Cheryl “Cookie”) Gipe, Winnebago, Don (Kim) Gipe, Pecatonica, Tom (Pat) Gipe, Pecatonica, Tim (Dina) Gipe, Sandwich; grandchildren; Jordyn Gipe, Melissa (fiancée Josh Fransen) Gipe-Taylor, Angela (Fiancée Cody Clagg) Kloster, Andrea (Frank) Espinoza, Aaron (Amanda) Gipe, Janelle (Tracy) Shumaker, Brittany (Steven Kewatt) Gipe, Quentin, Nolan, Anna and Andrew Gipe; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Betty Tenorio, Round Lake; niece, Candy (Neil) Lemme; and numerous nieces and nephews-in-law.

He was predeceased in death by his parents.

Funeral ceremonies were Aug. 31 at the Pecatonica United Methodist Church, with Pastor Amy Poust officiating.

Arrangments were completed by Countryman Funeral Home, 529 Washington St., Pecatonica.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
