Speaker says to remember our fallen more than once a year

Memorial Day is a time to honor all veterans who have passed away.

"Remembering our fallen once a year is not enough," said Richard Groharing, Rock Falls American Legion Post 902. "the empty dinner table is a constant reminder they are gone."

Groharing was the guest speaker during the annual Forreston Memorial Day service.

He talked about the history of the military and that women have always volunteered and contributed during wartime.

Groharing said Memorial Day is a time to remember all veterans who helped make the country what it is today.

"We are gathered here to remember those who gave their lives and those who are willing to fight and if necessary die for our freedom," said Groharing.

All soldiers have fought for their children, he said.

"It is through the children that Memorial Day will continue," said Groharing.

He said the children will need to continue the tradition of remembering the past and the soldiers who gave their lives in service to the county.

Village president Michael Harn briefly spoke during the service.

"Thank you. I think this memorial is gorgeous and sets Forreston apart," said Harn. "Thank everyone whose names are on the bricks. Thank you to all the veterans who protect us."

This year, the Memorial Day service had extra meaning because of the anniversary of Taps.

Taps has been in use for 150 years.

The service also included patriotic music performed by the Forreston School Marching Band and Joy Hotchkiss.
