Changes coming to OHS track

Big changes will be made at the Oregon High School track and football field.

A $500,000 project was put out for bids on Jan. 17 during the Oregon School Board meeting.

Bids on the project are due by Feb. 7 and the school board will discuss the project and award the bids during a Feb. 20 meeting.

The aging track is deteriorating and the board is looking at replacing the current six-lane track with an eight-lane track.

The increased track size would allow the school to host post-season track meets.

Increasing the track size would require moving the long jump and triple jump from the current location on the east and west side of the football field to a spot south of the track.  The area is currently partially used by the shot put field.

The track replacement project is part of health life safety projects (HLS) that the school district is required to address and fix.

Eight alternate bids were being requested. The bids items, estimated costs, and funds used for each item are:

– Red track, $35,822, HLS

– Retaining wall and sidewalk, $25,000, Tort, Vendor, Operations & Maintenance (O&M),

– Discus pad relocation, $20,000, HLS,

– Shot put pads, curbs and field, $16,000, HLS,

– East side drainage, $46,000, HLS,

– Remove and replace fencing, $36,000, HLS, Tort, and O&M,

– Gravel drive, $7,000, Tort,

– Bituminous drive, $12,250, Tort.

Each of the alternate bids will be discussed by the school board before awarding the bids.  The board may or may not accept any or all of the alternate bids.

A public comment will be held before the board discusses the project Feb. 20.

The Oregon School Board meets at the Oregon High School Library at 6:30 p.m.
