Lady Cardinals finish third in tournament

The Forreston High School girls basketball team finished off the Forreston Girls Thanksgiving Tournament by winning two of three games, and that allowed them to finish in third place out of six teams.
The Lady Cardinals had no problems coming away with a win over Christian Life on Nov. 21 as they defeated them by a score of 54-34, and they followed that up with an easy victory over Eastland on Nov. 22 by a score of 52-30.
In the tournament’s final game, Forreston couldn’t overcome an early deficit, and they fell to Stockton on Nov. 23 by a score of 46-39.
The 2-1 record in the final three games of the tournament gave them a 3-2 mark for the tourney, and moved their season mark to 4-2.
In the team standings, Rochelle went 5-0 to finish in first place, Stockton was 4-1 and finished in second, Winnebago was fifth, and Christian Life was sixth.
One Lady Cardinal was named to the tournament’s all-tournament team for her efforts during the tournament. Emily Korf earned all-tourney recognition as she was named to the five person squad.
Forreston didn’t waste time jumping out to a lead in their Nov. 21 match-up against Christian Life as they outscored their opponents by five in the first, and they went into the second leading 16-11.
The second quarter was close, but the Lady Cards did add three points to their lead going into the half, 27-19. They added three more points to their advantage in the third, and led by 11 with one period remaining, 34-23.
Forreston exploded for 20 points in the final quarter as they held the Lady Eagles to seven, and went on to post a 20 point victory, 54-34.
Leading the scoring for the Lady Cards were Rachel Walton with 16 points, including four three-pointers; Mykil Baker added 10, Korf had seven, Hannah Curry and Anna Drake each finished with six, Maggie Curry chipped in four, Ketarah DeVries finished with three, and Morgan Heinz had two for Forreston.
The Lady Cards pulled ahead of Eastland early in their match-up on Nov. 22, and they led by eight points following the first quarter of play, 15-7. The second quarter was more of the same, and they held on to a 16 point advantage at the half, 31-15.
The teams went back and forth in the third, but Forreston added two points to their lead, 42-24. The final period was another good one for Forreston as they outscored the Lady Cougars 10-6, and Forreston went on to win the game by 22, 52-30.
The scoring leaders for the Lady Cards were Korf with 15 points, DeVries finished with 11, Drake chipped in six, Walton had five, Maggie Curry, Hannah Curry, and Baker all finished with four; and Morgan Heinz rounded out the scoring with three points in the game.
The final game of the tournament against Stockton on Nov. 23 was a match-up of 3-1 teams, and the winner finished in second with the loser finishing in third.
The first quarter was very competitive, but it was the Lady Blackhawks that gained the early lead as they outscored Forreston 15-11 for a four point lead. The second was more of the same as Stockton added five points to their lead, and the Lady Cards were down by nine points at the half, 24-15.
The Lady Cards were finally able to outscore Stockton in the third quarter, but it was only by one point as they trailed by eight with one quarter remaining, 35-27. The final quarter was more of the same, and the Lady Blackhawks held on for the seven point victory, 46-39.
Leading the scoring attack for Forreston were Drake with 11 points, Maggie Curry added nine, DeVries finished with seven, Hannah Curry had six, Walton chipped in four, and Baker rounded out the scoring with two.
