Gene Miller

James Eugene “Gene” Miller, 82, Oregon, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 in Oregon Health Care Center. 

He was born Jan. 8, 1928 in Dixon, the son of Edward J. and Alpha J. Westervelt Miller.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952.

He married Lucille Matychowiak in Mendota, on Feb. 7, 1959.

Miller graduated from the University of Illinois, received his masters degree from Northern Illinis University, taught fourth grade in Leaf River for 13 years and retired in 1977.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon, the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, Nature Conservancy, Whale Watchers, Prairie Preservation Society of Ogle County, Pheasants Forever, VFW, and U of I Alumni Club. 

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; daughter, Marilyn (Bill) Ellerby, Sandwich; sons, Mark Miller, Oregon, Father Martin J. Miller, Oak Park, and Will (Diane) Miller, Glen Ellyn, IL; grandchildren, Libby Ellerby, Evan and Dawson Miller, and step-grandson, Chad Zellers; sister, JoAnn (Bill) Powel, Nekoosa, Wis.; and brother, Richard (Miriam) Miller, Middleton, Wis. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-granddaughter, Monica Zellers. 

Christian funeral mass was held on Aug. 24 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev. Richard Kramer officiating. 

Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. 

Arrangements were completed by Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon.
