A former Oregon High School golf standout helped the Rock Valley College golf team finish second at the NJCAA Division III Championship June 7-11.

Andrew Canfield, a freshman at RVC, finished in the top 20 overall in the tournament individually with a four round total of 309, and that helped the team fire a total of 1223 and finish second to Monroe Community College’s total of 1217.

The tournament was held at Chautauqua Golf Course in New York.

“It’s a great feeling to know that all the hard work we have put in has paid off,” said Canfield. “There were times where we questioned why we were working so hard this fall, and this answers that question.”

The 17th place finish put Canfield just out of the reach of earning All-American recognition for the 2010 season.

That didn’t bother him because he knew he didn’t have his best outing in the tournament, and he was pleased to be able to help the team finish runner-up.

“I didn’t really have my best game going into the tournament. I really just had to grind it out,” said Canfield. “I was still able to keep my scores reasonable and help my team. I am extremely happy with my finish.

“To see that I can finish 17th in the nation without my best game gives me confidence going into next year,” continued Canfield. “This tournament has given me all the motivation to work hard, on and off the course, and to continue to work to be a better golfer.”

Canfield opened up the tournament with a round of 76, and followed that with a 77 in the second round. His third round was his highest, a 79, and he finished with another 77.

Sandhills Community College was third with a 1231, Nassau Community College was fourth with a 244, and Cincinnati St. Tech was fifth with a 1245.

Other Rock Valley finishers were Anthony Ciaccio, who finished tied for third place overall with a 297; Bryce Davis in 12th with a 305, Shayne Overall, who finished tied for 26th with a 316; and tied for 29th overall with a 317 was Andy Wilkinson.
