Bernard E. “Ben” Speck, 80, Oregon and formerly of Glen Ellyn, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 in the Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home, Oregon.

He was born June 12, 1929 in Chicago, the son of Walter and Stella (Gleba) Speck.

He married Joan Binger on Sept. 18, 1954 in Glen Ellyn.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with occupation forces in Japan following World War II.

He was employed as a photoengraver for the Chicago Tribune for 41 years.

He was a member of the International Photoengravers Union of North America, Chicago Photoengravers Union #5, and the American Legion of Glen Ellyn.

He enjoyed woodworking and believed that his family was the most important thing in his life.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, Oregon; sons, Eric (Barbara) Speck, Viroqua, Wis., and Robert (Diana) Speck, Oregon; daughter, Mary (Cliff) Jensen, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and grandchildren, Camilla Speck, Benjamin Speck, Matthew Speck, Kathryn Speck, Grace Jensen and Connor Jensen.

He was predeceased  by two brothers and three sisters.

Services were scheduled for at Wednesday, March 3 at 8 p.m. in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. preceded by visitation from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pastor Michael Hoffman of Oregon Church of God will officiate. 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to the Oregon Fire Department.
