Suspect sought in attempted burglary

By Vinde Wells - Editor

No arrests have been made in an attempted bank robbery and high speed police chase last week in Holcomb.

Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel said deputies are actively investigating the incident which began Jan. 27 when employees were coming to work at Holcomb State Bank.

“We’re working with other area law enforcement agencies and following up on leads,” Beitel said Monday.

He said a male wearing a face mask attempted to enter the bank by following an employee through a back door at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 27.

“Apparently the timing was off. He didn’t get there before the door closed,” Beitel said.

After the unsuccessful attempt, the suspect or suspects fled from the bank parking lot in a dark green car, possibly a Cadillac Seville, with tinted windows.

Later that day, a deputy investigating the incident, spotted the car  with at least one person inside parked outside a house in Holcomb.

When the deputy approached the car, the driver took off, leading the deputy on a chase that went north of Ill. 251 at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The deputy lost sight of the car in the New Milford area, after calling for assistance from the Illinois State Police and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.

Beitel said that during their investigation, deputies learned a similar car was seen Jan. 25 at 8:15 a.m. near the Byron Bank at the intersection of Ill. 72 and 251 in Davis Junction.

He said a car meeting the same description was also observed recently by a Sycamore police officer outside a credit union there.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office at 815-732-2136 or Ogle-Lee Crime Stoppers are 815-732-7610 or 888-228-4488.

I am staying inside.
I like snow and plan on cross-country skiing/sledding.
I don't like it because I have to shovel snow.
I expect it because I live in Northern Illinois.
It has not affected me at all.
